What is the difference between the terms "information technology" versus the "internet"?

i am doing a term paper on this subject. much of my research uses infotech and internet interchangeably. but, i want to know the difference. will appreciate much any enlightenment on the subject.

the branch of engineering that deals with the use of computers and telecommunications to retrieve and store and transmit information is INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

and

a computer network consisting of a worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange is INTERNET.
